The Pros and Cons of Manual Treadmills

Manual treadmills are, in some ways, a better deal for the gung-ho fitness fan than their motorized brethren. A manual treadmill will be far cheaper than any motorized treadmill, and since you provide all the movement, your lower body will get excellent exercise. Manuals are ideal for getting your heart rate up into that sweet spot that burns lots of calories. They also lighter than motorized treadmills, so the weight isn't likely to stress your floor joists.

Are there disadvantages to these treadmills?

There are two sides to every story, and the issue of human-powered treadmills is no different. The big disadvantage to exercising on such a treadmill is the fact that it depends on you for all its motive force; if you slow, your treadmill slows, and if you stop, it stops. It can be hard to get the treadmill's belt moving, and tough on your joints, especially if you have a weight problem. There are usually no electronic doodads or fitness programs included on a manual model, and you won't be able to check your calorie usage, heart rate, and other vitals. Finally, you can't make adjustments to inclines without getting off the treadmill and changing them by hand; with most motorized exercise equipment, this requires little more than the touch of a button.

And yet...

All that said, these treadmills are amazingly cheap; you can spend $750-5,000 for a decent motorized model, while a good manual model will cost $100-200. When it comes to sports training, walking, running, and weight loss goals, manual is just as good as motorized. As long as you exercise hard and regularly, and make sure to get your heart rate up, the weight will melt away and you'll be in shape in no time.
